For the longest time, I believed that stress doesn’t pile up. When something exhausts you, you slow down till you feel better and get back to work. With time though, I realised that while slowing down is a luxury, it doesn’t help unless you blend it into your daily life in some form or the other. Real luxury is more than having the money to buy anything you want. It is about having time, gentleness and love. Real luxury is found in the simple things in life.
Real luxury is having people who check up on you. They don’t ask for anything in return. Just for you to be okay. If you have such people in your life, you are rich.
Real luxury is having the time to pursue your hobbies. I recently read somewhere that many of our hobbies get lost in time, not because of our 9-5, but because of how we spend our 5-9. These words have stuck in my head since. Your money determines your status in this world, but the richness of your life is determined by your daily actions and the path they lead you to later in life.
Real luxury is having a place you call home. It doesn’t have to be a mansion with a big front yard and an even bigger backyard. It can be your bed, tiny apartment, or next to a loved one.
Real luxury is being able to move gently through your day. To whisper ‘thank you’ every time something good happens in your day. To embrace the ‘boring’ days. To remind yourself to show kindness when your inner critique steps in. To have intentional pauses in the middle of chaos. Many people, including myself, do not possess this skill. We have to learn it, practice it and implement it every chance we get. But once you familiarise yourself with this feeling, there is no going back.
This week, take a moment to pause and reflect on these words: if you keep the monetary aspect aside, what does real luxury mean to you?
Write your list down on a piece of paper and think about it often. Slowly and steadily, make it a part of your life.

Thanks for distilling this down. I know we often want so many things, but when it comes down to it, it’s our own individual “real luxuries” that are the most important. 🥰
